Fat Injections to Enhance the Breasts New Orleans
Fat injections involve harvesting fat from one area of your body and then using that fat to augment or supplement another area. Dr. Pelias can use your own fat to give more volume (size), improve the shape, add cleavage, or just make the breasts more even.
Depending on the amount of fat needed, as well as your personal preference, the fat harvesting may be done in our uptown New Orleans cosmetic surgery facility or at our Metairie out-patient surgery facility.
After using liposuction to remove the fat, it is then collected into a sterile filtered canister. Dr. Pelias washes and filters the fat resulting in a concentrate of healthy viable fat. The fat is then carefully injected into the are of the breast that needs more volume.
Questions about Fat Injections
Am I a Candidate for Natural Breast Augmentation?
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for a fat injection is through a consultation with Dr. Pelias in our comfortable New Orleans Cosmetic Surgery office, but our patients for this procedure often:
Have specific, but realistic, goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance.
- Do not require a large volume of tissue to correct your problem or satisfy your needs.
- Wish to augment their size without the use of implants (hyperlink to breast augmentation).
- Need to have their implants removed for a variety of reasons
How do I prepare for my Natural Breast Augmentation?
Often Dr. Pelias will require that you:
- Obtain lab testing and a medical evaluation including a mammogram
- Avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements due to increased risk of bleeding.
What is the procedure?
Under local anesthesia, the excess fat is withdrawn from certain areas of the body (typically the abdomen or hips), either by using a needle or through techniques similar to those used during liposuction using a special suction cannula (lipo hyperlink). Once enough fat is taken from the donor area, it is then purified through the use of filters and washed to remove impurities.
The fat is then injected into areas needing augmentation through an injection needle that is usually passed in and out of the specific areas multiple times. This creates a ‘grid’ of threads of fat graft.
The procedure usually takes an hour or more, depending on the patient, the volume to be injected, and additional procedures that are being completed at the same time.
What is the recovery like?
People who undergo fat injections can usually return to their normal daily routines a day or two after treatment. Bruising and swelling in both the donor and injected areas is expected, but typically lasts only a few weeks. The recovery period may be longer based on the amount of fat removed. During the recovery period, special garments will be worn under your clothes to minimize swelling and to maximize the fat survival.
What are the results?
You will see immediate results from your fat injection, and your breasts may appear too augmented at first due to swelling.
Over time, the swelling will subside, and you will usually be able to see your true results in tone or two months. In general, about half of the injected fat is absorbed back into the body. Follow-up with Dr. Pelias is the best way to ensure long-lasting results.
How do I choose the right physician?
If you’re considering fat injection, look for a board-certified surgeon with specialized training and significant experience performing these procedures. Ask your cosmetic surgeon about credentials, training and how many fat injection procedures she has performed, and ask to see before and after pictures.
Dr. Pelias will go over any of your questions at your initial consultation appointment. She also encourages a second consultation at no charge to clarify any questions or concerns that you may have prior to your pre-op visit.
